The rest is fuzzy: almost, touched (meaning “due”),… And finally you have to say whether you are in the morning, evening or night. You can use half quarters (“2 quarters and a half of 12” is “11:37”) and plus/minus five minutes (“11:35” is “2 quarters and five of 12”). Basically you count quarters done to complete the hour, so “11:45” would be “3 quarters of 12”. That meant finding a proper stencil font and playing with the tolerances of the laser cuter when working on cardboard.įirst thing was to have a list of all the words I needed to fit in the 16x16 matrix. Now, there's something you should know about telling time in catalan in the traditional way. Font should be clearly visible, and with no “holes”.Actually the constraints due to this requirement had proved to be an interesting puzzle to solve. Actually this was unnecessary, I could have had one template for every language but in the initially I felt lazy about changing templates. It will have to have both catalan and spanish language in the same template.Characters forming words will be together, no weird things like starting a word, the a gap, and ending it.It will have characters, not words, which means that each character has a LED behind it and it can be lit individually, the previous wordclock from thinkgeek is an example of what I did not want.Number one being that the most challenging task has been designing the template for the characters. There are quite a few lessons from this project. But I'm not going to talk about that project either. It was great and my kids loved the pixelart. So first I built a clone of the The Game Frame Pixel Art Project. I also happened to have a couple of LED matrices (you know, the kind of stuff you have in your bedroom drawer). Because suddenly I happened to have 9 spare boards with an atmega328, an RTC, an SDCard slot, some nice buttons and the circuitry to drive a bunch of NeoPixels. But the $100 and the instructable he himself had done before about building your own made me decide to try it. I thought: “Wow! That's cool AND freaking freak! I want one”. My interest started with Philippe Chrétien's Fibonacci Clock campaign at Kickstarter. Recently I've been doing things with clocks and WS2812 LEDs (a.k.a. Mmm… well maybe that's a little bit on the expensive side… You can find other wordclocks at instructables, for instance, or buy one from thinkgeek or from a local jewelry for just 450€. Wordclocks are a subset of them by its own. There are tons of different ways to show or tell time. Clocks are top projects for the maker community.
